STRUCTURE OF THE ORDINARY

This research investigates the informal object systems through which urban residents negotiate, claim, and contest public space, documented through typological archiving and mapping across multiple cities and years. Where signage is intentional communication, ordinary objects are unintentional spatial negotiation: evidence of spatial decisions made outside formal planning frameworks. Each object category is documented and mapped comparatively, forming a record of how urban space is actually inhabited as opposed to how it is designed. Sidewalk Hierarchies extends this research into the spatial organisation and economic ecosystems of sidewalk use across major Asian cities.
